Children's Addresses - Storm Sunday: Creating a Storm

Have you ever been in a big storm?  What was it like?  (Responses) How do you think God creates a storm?

Well, how would you like to create a storm?  What would we need?  (Responses)

Big black clouds?  OK.  We have here two big black sheets that we could hold up high somewhere.  Perhaps from the pulpit?  Who wants to hold the clouds?

Fierce winds? OK.  We have several big fans, hand held fans and maybe electric fans.  Who will send the wind?

Thunder?  OK.  We have here several big drums!  We could make thunder with them. Who wants to make the thunder?

And lightning?  OK.  How will we do the lightning?  Maybe we can throw up these balls each attached to a long white ribbon.  When it comes down it will look like lightning.  Who wants to do the lightning?

Here we go. First wave the big black cloud!   Wave!
Then wave the fans and make the wind blow!  Blow!
Now hit the drums and make the thunder roll.  Roll!
Finally throw the balls and make the lighting fall.  Throw!
Now, all together!  Create a storm!

OK.  Stop!  What do you think?  Are people frightened?

Maybe God can do it better then we do.  And where do you think God is when there is a storm?  Waving clouds?  Blowing wind? Rolling thunder? Sending lightning?  Yes, I suppose. But do you know where God is especially in a storm?  (Responses)

Well, what is the point of a storm?  To frighten people?  To blow trees down?

NO!  The storm is to bring rain, to make the grass grow and the trees and the crops.  God does not pour rain down from heaven in a bucket!!!  Sometimes God sends a big storm to make you think.  What? To say, ‘Thank you God for the rain’.

Prayer: Thank you God for sending storms to make us see just how important rain is for us, for the animals and everything on planet Earth.  Amen.
