Children’s Addresses - Solar Sunday: The Story of King Solar

(Spoken by King Solar. He may be a puppet made from a hula hoop, covered with red cloth, having rays jutting out, 2 eyes and a big mouth)

Good morning! What is your name? (Responses)

Can you guess who I am and my name? (Responses)

I am very hot, very, very hot!
Yes, and I am very, very bright!

Yes, I am the sun. And my name is King Solar! Do you know where I came from? (Responses)

A long time ago there was a great big explosion in the sky. Bang! (Make bang noises) Big balls of fire went in all directions. I was one of those great balls of fire!

And do you know where I ended up? (Responses)Above you in your sky! Right above you!

Then God said ‘I have a job for you. There are a lot of rocks flying around in the sky and I want you to take care of them. You have to be like their king and keep them going round you in circles, keep them in control.’

Well, I agreed to be king of this part of the sky. Wouldn’t you? Would you like to be a king or a queen? (Responses)

Then God said I had special jobs to do with each rock, which we now call a planet.
I had to keep one planet all golden and glistening with moons. I had to keep another planet red. And one planet I had to keep green.

Do you know what planet that is? (Responses)

That’s right. Baby Earth! ( The storyteller may use the Baby Earth puppet from Planet Earth Sunday to interact with King Solar)

But Baby Earth wasn’t green at first. She was brown.

Then God created 2 things for baby Earth to help make her green. Do you know what they are? (Responses) Yes, water and air. The water soaks into the ground and makes plants grow green.

Why did God put air all around Baby Earth? To help keep her warm and keep the plants alive? Yes. But there is another reason.

The air is like a big net around Baby Earth. You cannot see it but is there (Use a net to visualise the point.)

Do you know what happens when I shine onto Baby Earth? (Responses) Well, my light goes through the net and lands on baby Earth. Some of the light makes her warm. But some bounces off and goes back through the net into the sky. That keeps Baby Earth just the right temperature to be green.

What would happen if someone blocked some of the holes in the net so that some of the light did not escape back into the sky? What do you think? (Responses)

That’s right! Baby Earth would get warmer and warmer and warmer…and maybe too warm. Do you like it when you get too warm??? (Responses)

So you tell you mother or father or the pastor of your church that we must not make Baby Earth too warm. They’ll know what to do.

This is my song you can sing with them:

I’m the mighty sun who rules the sky,
I’m the brightest light you’ve ever seen.
When I shine on Baby Earth just right
I make her warm and keep her green.
