Children's Addresses - Cosmos Sunday: The Web of Creation
(Perhaps using puppet Baby Earth from planet Earth Sunday)
If you look across the front of the church, what do you see? A great big net, or better a wide wide web! What do you think it is for? Who might use it? (Responses)
Actually, this is a very big web, like a spider’s web only much bigger. Have you ever seen a spider’s web and how each little fibre is connected to the next!
This web is really the world—the skies, the stars, the planets, everything. What is else is in the world? (Responses). Another word for the whole world is the cosmos. OK. Cosmos!
Can you see someone you know who is connected to that web? Look hard? Who is that there? That’s Baby Earth. (Take her down and become Baby Earth puppet)
Good morning! What is your name? My name is Baby Earth. See here is Australia. Here is NZ. Where’s America? On the back side!
I was once a little piece of stardust floating through space. Then someone caught me and made me part of that big web. Who caught me? God!
So now I am part of this big big web called the world or the cosmos. And I am not just floating around anywhere. I am connected with the Sun. I get sunlight from the sun. I need just enough sunlight to keep me warm and alive. Can you see the Sun? And the Sun is connected to the stars. Everything is connected.
You are connected too. You are connected to your mummy and daddy. They give you food each day. Where does the food come from? From vegetables in the ground! So the food is connected to the ground. And the ground is connected to me, Baby Earth.
So God connects us all in one wide wide web.
What happens if you are not connected to your mummy and you get no food? What happens to Baby Earth if she gets too much sun and starts to burn up? (Responses) So we have to take care that baby Earth does not get too hot, right? You ask you parents what might make baby Earth too hot! OK?
Let us all connect, join hands, one of you hold on to me and some of you hold onto the big web. That is how we live. We are all connected. Take care of Baby Earth so that we stay connected and alive. (Return Baby Earth to the web).
Prayer: Thank you God for connecting us with planet Earth. Help us to care for our planet so that planet Earth stays healthy and we stay happy.
